Nutrition (eating carbs)

OK so in our class this week we learned a lot about nutrition, over next week or so we will be posting about the 6 essential nutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, water, vitamins and minerals)

These post will not be telling you how to eat or even what to eat, they will just be stating the facts that we have learned. I want to make it clear that neither Allison or I are a professional Nutritionists.

So the truth and facts about eating carbohydrates...

Picture found here.

First thing's first, carbs are a very essential source of energy for your body. Your body's number 1 choice of "fuel" for your energy and also your mental function. Although cutting all carbs from your diet is very popular and will make you loss weight, i'm not going to lie and tell you that you will not loss weight because you will, you will just feel like poo if this is the way you go. Your body needs carbs to function correctly and for energy. Who wants to feel like poo all the time?

Facts...

What are carbohydrates you ask? Carbohydrate is a nutrient made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. There are 2 main types of carbohydrates, simple and complex carbohydrates.
What are simple carbs? Simple carbs break down quickly into glucose (sugar).Since simple carbs brake down fast they are a good sourse for fast energy. If you are not very active your body may not burn it off quick enough so it tends to store in your body and turn into fat. Some examples are the soft drinks that you like to drink, candy and processed food, these are some examples of carbs that you want to stay away from.  There are some simple carbs that are good for you to eat like yogurt, milk and honey!
What are complex carbs? Complex carbs are the carbs that you want to eat most of. Complex carbs  brake down slower in your body giving you body time to burn them properly and use them for a good source of long lasting energy. Your complex carbs are found more in your fresh whole fruits, grains and vegetables.
How many carbs should I be eating? You are actually suppose to be eating 45 to 65% of your calorie intake. More carbs than fats and proteins.
How can you tell how may carbs you are eating? 1 gram of carbohydrates is equivalent to 4 calories.

So get out there and eat your carbs people. Don't choose to feel like poo if you don't have too, you can still lose weight and eat carbs.

Very well said! I love carbs! Since I'm a vegetarian, carbs are a big part of my diet. I think that as long as you eat the right kinds of carbs instead of eating the crap you'll do just fine.
